The invention relates to a method for assisting a driver in steering a vehicle, in which method a servo torque (MU) and an additional actuating torque (MS), which can additionally be exerted on the steering system (2) of the vehicle, are generated in order to prompt the driver to change the position of the steering wheel. The steering intervention by the additional requisite actuating torque (MS) can be made substantially more acceptable if the gradient of the actuating torque (MS') is limited to a maximum value (Max1).
