Entry points are managed so as to be readily understood by the user. The reception unit of a data recording apparatus receives streams including encoded digital data. An analyzing unit detects change in attributes of the stream received by the reception unit and outputs the detected information. A control unit acquires the detected information output by the analyzing unit and time information for the time at which an attribute change was detected as first entry points, and generates management information containing these first entry points. A drive records the management information generated by the control unit and the stream received by the reception unit to a data recording medium such as an optical disc. An input unit enables the user to input and set second entry points in the playback path of the stream to enable accessing and reproducing the stream from a desired point. The control unit produces the management information so that the first entry points and second entry points can be discriminated from each other. <IMAGE>
