A Reed-Solomon decoding method and an apparatus are provided to minimize the delay time due to the correction error locator polynomial calculation by outputting the highest degree term of the corresponding polynomial. A syndrome computation block(10) produces the syndrome. The syndrome computation block outputs the syndrome to a syndrome polynomial computation block(30). A deletion position polynomial computation block(20) produces the deletion position polynomial. The syndrome polynomial computation block produces the modified syndrome polynomial from the deletion position polynomial. The syndrome polynomial computation block outputs the modified syndrome polynomial to the correction Euclidean algorithm computation block(40). The correction Euclidean algorithm computation block produces the error evaluator polynomial and the error locator polynomial by computing the modified syndrome polynomial. The error evaluator polynomial and the error locator polynomial are outputted to an error locator polynomial computation block(50). The error correction block(80) outputs the corrected code by correcting the error. A memory(90) provisionally stores the reception mark.
