An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to extract an object from a scan image, recognize a blank ratio of a text area according to a coordinate location of the object and determine a document direction based on the blank information, thereby improving use convenience. An image forming apparatus comprises a scanning unit(100), a document direction determining unit(400) and an image processor(300). The scanning unit scans a document and outputs a scan image. The document direction determining unit determines a document direction according to a blank area in a text area of the scan image. The image processor receives information about the document direction from the document direction determining unit and rotates the scan image of the scanning unit to be equal to the document direction of a previous document.
