A system and a method for generating a two-layer and 3D representation of an image are provided to include a boundary layer identifying a foreground color, a foreground mismatch value and an alpha value in a corresponding layer and include a main layer identifying a background color and background depth of a pixel of a corresponding layer associated with depth discontinuation areas and a color and a mismatch value of a different pixel of a corresponding layer, thereby easily transmitting and storing data. A digital image to be expressed, a digitalized image and a mismatch point map are inputted(300). Locations of depth discontinuation points are identified within an image by using the mismatch point map(302). A pixel found in an area of a predetermined size surrounding the depth discontinuation points is within depth discontinuation areas of an image(304). A foreground color and a background color of each pixel in the depth discontinuation areas are set by using an alpha value and a matting technique(306). The mismatch values of the foreground color and the background color are predicted with regard to each pixel in the depth discontinuation areas(308).
