PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera with a high foreign matter removing effect and a foreign matter removing method. SOLUTION: The camera comprises: an imaging element (71) for converting the optical image of an object to electric signals; a light transmitting member (73) provided on the surface of the imaging element (71) or more on the object side of an optical path than the imaging element (71), which object light passes through; a foreign matter removing mechanism (74) for removing a foreign matter stuck to the light transmitting member (73); a focal plane type shutter mechanism (6) provided adjacently to the light transmitting member (73) and provided with at least one shutter curtain; and a control part (8) for operating the foreign matter removing mechanism (74) and operating a shutter mechanism (6) linked with the operation of the foreign matter removing mechanism (74).
