PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device having excellent visual contrast. SOLUTION: A histogram, in which gradations representing each gradation range and the number of pixels included in each gradation range are associated, is formed in a histogram forming part 12; light emitting luminance of a backlight 24 and a gradation conversion function to each pixel of an input video are selected based on the histogram in a control parameter selecting part 14; selected gamma conversion is performed to the input video and then synchronization of a gamma-converted video and the selected backlight luminance is adjusted in a timing controller 16; and the converted video is sent to a liquid crystal panel 22 together with a synchronous signal for driving the liquid crystal panel 22; and the backlight luminance is sent to a backlight driving part 18.
