PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent looseness and separation of fibers of a cloth around the buttonhole which must be sewn by forming a seam for reinforcing a buttonhole seam when the buttonhole seam is formed around a buttonhole by a cutting operation using a cloth-cutting knife. SOLUTION: This buttonhole sewing machine which has a seam forming means for forming a buttonhole seam consisting of a pair of side seams on the both sides of a cut buttonhole which is formed in a material to be sewn, and bar-tacking seam at least formed at an end of the buttonhole such that the bar-tacking seam is continued from the two side seams; is characterized in having a control means, before forming the buttonhole seam, forming superposed seams formed by repeating the reinforcing seams consisting of zigzag seams or straight stitch each having a width smaller than that of each side seams, at positions formed with the left/right reinforcing seams, and capable of setting start points of the left/right reinforcing seams in the direction orthogonally crossing with the buttonhole.
