PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the pressure in a back pressure chamber without increasing the processing accuracy of a valve stopper for damping valve or a backup collar when back pressure chamber is provided at the back face of the damping valve, by installing the backup collar at the periphery of the valve stopper. SOLUTION: A damping force adjusting structure of a hydraulic shock absorber 10 is equipped with the valve stopper 23 installed on the back face of the damping valve 34, the backup collar 54 installed on the valve stopper 23 in such a way as sliding with a sliding gap interposed in between, a leaf spring 56 installed on the back face of the backup collar 54, and the back pressure chamber 52 formed by pressing the front face of the backup collar 54 to the damping valve 34 with the leaf spring 56, wherein a slit 56A is formed in the leaf spring 56 which holds down the backup collar 54, whereby the leak amount of the pressure from the back pressure chamber 52 passing through the sliding gap between the backup collar 54 and the valve stopper 23 is controlled by the slit 56A in the leaf spring 56.
