An apparatus and a method capable of calculating resolution are provided to measure resolution reflecting a characteristic of an edge, thereby reflecting physical and software characteristics of resolution. A domain having an edge is selected from a test chart(S120). A space frequency response(SFR) of an image forming apparatus is calculated from the selected domain(S130). A frequency corresponding to a reference SFR is set up as a reference frequency of the SFR of the image forming apparatus among the calculated SFRs of the image forming apparatus(S160). The set reference frequency determines resolution of the image forming apparatus(S180).
