PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which enables satisfactory contrast and high-speed response without needing an orientation process of liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: In the display element adapted to perform display by applying an electric field to a medium held between a pair of substrates, at least one of which is transparent, a liquid crystalline material showing blue phase (including both a liquid crystal compound and a liquid crystal composition) is used as the medium, and the element shows optically isotropic phase when no electric field is applied, and shows optical anisotropy by field-induced phase transfer when the field is applied.
