For the operation of a vehicle fuel cell system (1), a reformer (3) generates hydrogen fuel gas from a fuel containing hydrogen and an oxidator containing oxygen. At least one fuel cell (2) generates an electric current using the anode gas from the reformer and a cathode gas containing oxygen. During normal reformer working, the fuel and oxidator are in a strong hypostoichiometric feed and, during regeneration are in a weak hypostoichiometric feed.
