PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method of an organic EL element showing high durability when driving it for a long period of time and having a small quantity of energy loss. SOLUTION: This electroluminescent device has an organic electroluminescent element 101 having one or more organic layer containing a luminescent layer between a positive electrode and a negative electrode, and a driving means 106 to drive the organic electroluminescent element 101 by impressing a voltage obtained by superimposing an ac voltage having a frequency of 10 kHz or less over a forward dc voltage to it, and the minimum value of the superimposed voltage is larger than the luminescence starting voltage of the organic electroluminescent element 101.
