PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high quality granular metallic iron, reducing sulfur content, with high productivity with which even in the case of using carbonaceous reducing agent containing much sulfur, such as coal and coke, an amount of sulfur mixed in the granular metallic iron can be restrained as much as possible. SOLUTION: In a raw material mixture 1, a basicity [(CaO+MgO)/SiO<SB>2</SB>] of slag is controlled to be in the range of 1.4-2.3 and into the above raw material mixture, in the case of blending Na<SB>2</SB>O supply material, the Na<SB>2</SB>O content in the slag is controlled to be≥0.10%, in the case of blending K<SB>2</SB>O supply material, K<SB>2</SB>O content in the slag is controlled to be≥0.10% and in the case of blending Li<SB>2</SB>O supply material, the Li<SB>2</SB>O content in the slag is controlled to be≥0.05%.
