PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a linear aliphatic diol useful as a monomer raw material and an additive for a polyester resin and a polyurethane resin, and an intermediate for a raw material for a medicine or an agrochemical. SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing a 9-12C linear aliphatic diol which comprises a step of producing a dihydroxyalkadiene by hydroxylating a dihalogenoalkadiene represented by general formula (1) (wherein, Xs are each independently a chlorine atom, a bromine atom or an iodine atom; and n is an integer of 3-6), and a step of hydrogenating the dihydroxyalkadiene.
