PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device and a map server device, and a map-acquiring method, capable of displaying map information, even when it goes outside of a cellular phone service area during performing navigation by displaying the present location; without setting a destination and in a state other than navigation, such as waiting and mail generation. SOLUTION: A present location calculating means 107 calculates the present location on the basis of information obtained from a GPS satellite 400, and an area-specifying means 108 compares the present location with a map acquisition recommended area to specify the map acquisition recommended area where its own terminal is located. An area correspondence map specifying means 109 specifies a map which corresponds to the specified map acquisition recommendation area and requests a map server device 200 that it provide map information. When the map server device 200 is requested the map information from the portable terminal device 100, the map server device 200 specifies a corresponding map from a map information database 202 and distributes the map via a network.
