PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator having a means for coping with pupil face movement caused by zooming, without requiring a zoom system in which a conjugated relation between an image and a pupil, complicating the configuration, is maintained, and to provide a zoom microscope that has this illuminator. SOLUTION: The illuminator 20 is disposed in the zoom microscope 30 having, in order from a specimen face 10a, an objective lens 11, aperture diaphragm 12, and afocal zoom system 13, and is used to emit illuminating light to the specimen face 10a via the afocal zoom system 13, aperture diaphragm 12 and objective lens 11. The illuminator 20 includes, in order from the afocal zoom system 13 toward the light source, an imaging lens 15, a pupil position correcting optical system 16, and the light source 18. The pupil position correcting optical system 16 corrects an emission pupil position change, which arises on the light source side of an illuminating optical system as a result of zooming of the afocal zoom system 13.
