PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a sufficient operation property of a shift lever in a state that assembling is completed by enhancing the rigidity of each holding piece while ensuring a sufficient assembling property. SOLUTION: This shift lever device for an automobile is provided with a base plate 30; a ball attachment cylinder body 34 formed on an apex of the base plate 30; a ball seat 40 attached to the ball attachment cylinder body 34 from an upper surface opening; a ball 51 to be held attached to the ball seat 40 in a holding state; a lever shaft 54 erectly provided so as to be extended from the ball 51 to be held in a radial direction; and an upper support 60 for removal-stopping the ball 51 to be held attached to the ball attachment cylinder body 34 through the ball seat 40 in a state that it is attached to the upper edge of the ball attachment cylinder body 34. The ball seat 40 has a curved inner surface having an inner surface shape corresponding to the outer surface of the ball 51 to be held, and is provided with a plurality of holding pieces 42 adjacent to one another through a predetermined slit in which an inner surface side totally forms a spherical concave corresponding to the outer peripheral surface of the ball 51 to be held.
