The device has safety and control circuits (10, 13), with which movement of a gate (1) is stopped and/or reversed depending on an obstacle. A light barrier detects the object and produces a measurement signal which not activates a safety mode. The circuits are designed based on a time difference which depends on the gate from the barrier to another light barrier. A third light barrier is guided through a gap between the former barriers in one measuring state if the gate is arranged in a path between two of the barriers and before the gate reaches the third barrier.
