<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve in a technically easy way a centering of illumination following a focal length variation of a main objective of a microscope. <P>SOLUTION: The microscope (10) comprises: a main objective (20) having a variable focal length an illuminating unit (40) including a light source and an illuminating optical system (41, 42, 43 and 44) for generating an illuminating beam path directed onto the object plane (100) and extending outside the main objective (20); and a means being provided for centering the illumination based on a variation of the focal length of the main objective (20). The illuminating optical system (41 to 44) is configured such that at least part thereof can be moved laterally for centering the illumination.
