PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that has a focus detecting optical system capable of covering a wide focus detection area without increase in the number of components despite the simple optical system. SOLUTION: The focus detecting optical system includes a brightness diaphragm S with a pair of apertures, and a pair of re-imaging lenses L2, which pairs are disposed with the optical axis L of a photographic lens 1 between them. Each of the pair of re-imaging lenses L2 has, on both its sides, convex lenses, which are an entering convex face L2a and an exiting convex face L2b. It is assumed that on a face through which the optical axis L of the photographic lens 1 and the gravity center SG of the apertures of the brightness diaphragm S pass, the most projecting parts of the entering and exiting convex faces L2a and L2b in a direction parallel to the optical axis L of the photographic lens 1 are face vertexes P3 and P4. In this case, the face vertexes P3 and P4 of the entering and exiting convex faces L2a and L2b of both the convex lenses are separated in the same direction from the optical axis L of the photographic lens 1, and the distance of the face vertex P3 of the entering convex face L2a from the optical axis L of the photographic lens 1 is longer than the distance of the face vertex P4 of the exiting convex face L2b from the optical axis L of the photographic lens 1.
