PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing a glass compact in which generation of contact marks in a glass lump is prevented by preventing welding of molten glass on a support in a simple structure and a minimum space. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a support (2) composed of one board to support a molten glass lump flowing out of a pipe (4), and a mold (3) to form the glass lump into a preform or an optical element. The support (2) is dropped at a higher velocity than the free-fall velocity of the glass lump and then moved to a position where the support does not re-contact the falling glass lump, thereby removing and retracting the support from the glass lump.
