The invention relates to formoterol, which has been hitherto used for the treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma, exhibits powerful anti-cachectic efficacy with relatively-low adverse side effects and toxicity. The invention also relates to the use of formoterol or the pharmaceutically-acceptable solvates or salts thereof, particularly fumarate or fumarate dihydrate, for the preparation of a medicament for the prophylactic and/or therapeutic treatment of muscle wasting and/or a cachectic syndrome, both of which are associated with a catabolic condition in a mammal, particularly a human. Some of the catabolic conditions that can be treated with formoterol include cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), infections, diabetes, immobilisation or muscular dystrophies.
