The invention relates to a method and device for triggering a personal protection system in a motor vehicle, in particular, a pedestrian protection system on impact of an object with the vehicle. According to the method, the following steps are carried out: a force and/or deformation and/or elongation and/or acceleration brought about by the impact are recorded by a sensor device (12-1,..,12-n), the signals provided by the sensor device (12- 1,..,12-n) are analysed, on analysis, a compensation factor (KF) for compensation of variations in signal from the sensor (12-1,..,12-n) are taken into account such that information about the characteristics is provided. The compensation factor (KF) is determined from a relevant transfer function (TF) for at least one parameter, determined by sensors and the personal protection system is operated depending on the information about the characteristics of the impact.
