<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a polymeric phosphorus-containing composition which is especially useful for the catalytic hydrocyanidation of unsaturated organic compounds, the isomerization of unsaturated branched nitrile compounds into unsaturated linear nitrile compounds, and the hydroformylation of unsaturated organic compounds. <P>SOLUTION: This polymeric phosphorus-containing composition is derived from the aryl-aryl coupling of a substituted 2,2'-dihydroxyl-1,1'-binaphthalene or a substituted 2,2'-dihydroxyl-1,1'-biphenylene, wherein the polymerization by the aryl-aryl coupling is achieved by the direct oxidative coupling of binaphthalene or biphenylene, a copolymerization with an aromatic comonomer, or a copolymerization with an aldehyde.
