PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a layer short circuit occurring between adjacent turns of a coil conductor due to the solder flux component wetting up to the area around which the coil conductor is wound. SOLUTION: The surface mount coil component includes a drum-type core 11, a pair of connection electrodes 16a and 16b formed on the bottom surface 11B of the lower guard portion 11c of the drum-type core 11, and a coil conductor 12 that is a conductor coated with an insulating material that is wound around the conductor winding portion 11a of the drum-type core 11 and whose one and the other ends 13a and 13b are connected to the connection electrodes by the solder 17 respectively, wherein the coil conductor has a metal wire 13 and a first cover layer 14 made of a polyurethane resin and a second cover layer 15 made of a resin that is lower than the polyurethane resin in affinity to the rosin contained in the solder flux, the first and second cover layers 14 and 15 being laid around the metal wire 13 in this order. This prevents the solder flux component contained in the solder paste from wetting up along the surface of the coil conductor to reach the area around which the conductor of the coil is wound, and thereby the polyurethane cover of the coil conductor can be prevented from being softened.
