PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent magnetic characteristics, even if a under layer is reduced in film thickness, and shorten a distance between a magnetic head and a soft magnetic layer to achieve a steeper head magnetic field in recording. SOLUTION: At least a underlayer 2, a magnetic recording layer 3 and a protection film 4 are formed in this order on a nonmagnetic base material 1, and a liquid lubricating material layer 5 is formed on the protection layer. The magnetic recording layer 3 comprises ferromagnetic crystalline particles and an oxide surrounding the particles or a nonmagnetic crystalline grain boundary of a nitride. A gas pressure in forming the foundation layer is changed, and its surface layer part is formed in a higher gas pressure than its initial layer part. In a underlayer 2-forming method, the initial layer part is deposited in a low gas pressure, and the surface layer part is deposited in a higher gas pressure than the initial layer part.
