A message processing method of a multimedia processing apparatus is provided to display a part of a message, which is received while a multimedia menu such as DMB, PMP, game etc. is being performed, on an overlay window, and then execute an SMS or MMS application by using a designated shortcut key. When a short message or multimedia message is received, a multimedia processing apparatus outputs an overlay window in the shape of an icon or string to inform the arrival of a message(S1,S2). If a portion of the message is outputted on the overlay window without displaying the icon or string, a step that a user confirms brief information of the message is unnecessary(S3). The screen of the multimedia processing unit is divided into two screens, namely a game execution screen and a message menu screen. And, the current menu can be moved to a message menu after the game is terminated according the selection of a user(S4).
