An apparatus for generating an effective signal to noise ratio of each stream in an MIMO wireless communication system and a method therefor are provided to maximize the performance of a receiving stage which performs the ML(Maximum Likelihood) detection by using A PER(Pairwise Error Rate) and an SER(Symbol Error Rate). A modulation method combination generator(302) produces all available combinations of modulation methods having elements as much as the number of valid streams. A PER calculator(304) calculates a PER for the modulation method combinations provided from the modulation method combination generator. An SER calculator(306) calculates SERs of each stream in each modulation method combination by using PERs calculated by the PER calculator. An SNR converter(308) converts SERs calculated by the SER calculator into SNRs of each stream. An effective SNR decider(310) determines the effective signal to noise ratio of the final stream.
