A plate 9 acts as discharge valve for hopper 1 which feeds plastic material to an extrusion machine. The plate is carried between disc 4 and annulus 6, both of which are adapted to rotate in apertures contained within the walls of the hopper. The opening 8 of annulus 6 is closed by plate 11 urged inwards by eccentric 13 controlled by handle 15. Handle 2 is rotated to displace plate 9 to permit material from the hopper to fall downwards under gravity whilst handle 15 is rotated to allow plate 11 to be removed whenever the hopper is to be emptied without using valve 9. The valve 9, when open, assumes the position 100 (Fig. 4) to avoid material entering between its sliding surfaces.
