A metal or metalloid oxide especially TiO2, ZrO2, ThO2 and MgO of particle size less than one micron is reacted with a Group IVA, VA or VI metal halide or oxyhalide in the vapour phase with or without an oxygen-free carrier gas to incorporate metal and halogen components on the surfaces of the particles. Examples refer to zirconia contacted with TiCl4 and titania with VCl4. Specifications 969,762, 969,763, 969,764, 969,766 and 969,767 also are referred to.ALSO:The polymerization catalyst is identical with that of Specification 969,764, the treatment (see Division C1) of the inorganic metal or metaloid halide is effected with the vapour of the Group IVa, Va, VIa metal halide or oxyhalide. Hydrogen may be present as a chain-terminator. Specifications 969,762, 969,763, 969,766 and 969,767 also are referred to.
