A method of depositing a hard material protective coating 14 onto a substrate 10 wherein, prior to the deposition of the hard protective material coating, the substrate is pretreated by bombardment with metal ions of at least one rare earth element. The rare earth metal ions 12 are thereby implanted into said substrate. The substrate comprises a metal or a ceramic material, e.g. a coated tool for use in a machine tool, or a component that will be exposed to high temperature in use. The rare earth metal ions may include lanthanum, cesium, scandium and yttrium and the coating may be a PVD coating such as a metallic nitride. A protective top oxide coating and an intermediate nitrogen free intermetallic layer may also be provided. Also claimed is a coated substrate having an interfacial layer to the coating comprising at least one rare earth metal. |
