PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device with high efficiency capable of lighting a plurality of discharge lamps having different rated powers, minimizing the lowering of efficiency due to the difference of loads of the discharge lamps. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises a direct current power source, an inverter circuit connected to the direct current power source, a double resonance circuit connected to the inverter circuit, the discharge lamp receiving power from the double resonance circuit, a detection circuit detecting resonance current or resonance voltage of the double resonance circuit, and a control circuit changing operation frequencies of the inverter in accordance with detected values of the detection circuit. The plurality of discharge lamps are adapted to the discharge lamp lighting device as a compatible load, and the operation frequency in the case of lighting each discharge lamp is controlled so as to become lower than a prescribed frequency.
