<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulation device suitable for attaining the miniaturization of a device by enlarging a brightness dynamic range and the number of gradations and improving brightness and image quality of a display image. <P>SOLUTION: A projection display device 100 comprises a light source 10, dichroic mirrors 44a and 44b for separating light from the light source 10 into pieces of light of RGB three-original colors, a plurality of color modulation light valves having a plurality of pixels capable of independently controlling transmissivity by making the pieces of light separated with the dichroic mirros 44a and 44b incident on respectively, a dichroic prism 48 composing light from each color modulation light valve, and DMD 50 having a plurality of pixels capable of independently controlling reflectivity T2 by making light from the dichroic prism 48 incident on.
