Cardiac index (CI) is determined using a temperature measurement from a thermometer 1 placed in skin contact with the wrist of a subject. The thermometer is cooled to 15{C and placed in contact with the wrist over the radial artery 2 for 30 seconds, at which time a temperature reading is taken. The change in temperature (T) due to the warming ability (thermal response) of the skin is related to cardiac index. Cardiac index is calculated using an equation involving the skin thermal response (T), body surface area (BSA) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). |
