A portable terminal and a communication cell selection method are provided to select the communication cell of the second communication system by using information transmitted from a base station of the first communication system. A controller senses the power supplied to a portable terminal(S101), searches a GSM communication cell(S102), confirms that the GSM communication cell exists(S103), receives an SI3 message broadcasted from a base station of the GSM communication cell(S104), receives an SI2 quater message from the base station of the GSM communication cell(S106), checks information of a WCDMA system included in the SI2 quater message(S107), confirms whether Squal and Srxlev values are appropriate for a reference value from a WCDMA communication cell having the highest priority(S108). And if a cell which is most suitable for the selection standard among WCDMA communication cells is found, the controller selects the WCDMA communication cell(S109).
