A gas leakage detection apparatus and method are provided to detect a gas leakage precisely within a short time and prevent detection error. A gas leakage detection apparatus comprises a flow rate measuring unit(1) measuring the instantaneous flow rate of the gas flowing in the gas flow path, an instantaneous flow rate time-differentiation unit(3) computing the time differential value of the instantaneous flow rate measured by the flow rate measuring unit, a feature extraction unit(5) extracting the feature of gas flow including the combination of the instantaneous flow rate and the instantaneous flow rate time differential value, a storage unit(6) registering feature data indicating the feature of the gas flow, a feature data registration unit(8) registering feature data indicating the feature extracted by the feature extraction unit in the storage unit, and a leakage detection unit(7) detecting the occurrence of leakage and outputting the determination result.
