The invention relates to a method for purifying (~)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept- 5- en--3-one. To date crystallisation constituted the final purification step in the production of (~)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one. It is, however, advantageous from bo th the economic and ecological point of view to carry out purification exclusively by means of extractive measures. The method comprises the steps of extracting an aqueous reaction solution of (~)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one with an organic solvent, separating a resulting organic phase containing the (~)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-on e from a resulting aqueous phase, mixing the resulting organic phase with water, and separating a final aqueous phase containing the (~)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one fr om a final organic phase.
