A memory system having nonvolatile memory and buffer memory and data read method thereof is provided to perform different reading according to the pattern of data by determining whether the prefetch operation is performed or not according to the data size. A controller checks the assigned state of the start address allotted to a buffer memory(S110), and it checks the presence of the addresses corresponding to data from the address mapping table to the start address and from the start address to 30 sectors. The controller determines the heat(Hit) of the buffer memory according to the search result(S120). The controller transmits data from the start address to 30 sectors from the buffer memory to a host according to the hit status of the buffer memory(S160).
