A constant velocity ratio universal joint is provided with an intermediate coupling member between the driving andd riven members and connected to each of them by torque-transmitting balls located in complementary race grooves in the respective members . As shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate member is a part spherical ring 20 encircling the ends of pairs of yoke arms 13, 14 and 17, 18, the balls 22 being mounted in grooves 19 in the ends of the arms and complementary grooves 21 in the internal surface of the ring. The balls may be mounted in a cage to ensure that they lie in a plane bisecting the angle between the shafts 11, 16. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the coupling ring is mounted inside the yoke arms, the race grooves being provided in the internal surfaces of the arms and external surface of the ring, and the latter is centred by ball-and-socket joints at the ends of the shafts. In the arrangement of Fig. 2 the coupling ring 27 is interposed between a part spherical enlargement 23 of the end of shaft 11 and a hollow housing 25 on the other shaft 16, two sets of balls 30, 32 being mounted in pairs of grooves 24, 28 and 26, 29 in the adjacent surfaces of the respective members. |
