The method involves circulating a cleaning fluid in a heat exchanger (10) at controlled temperature and pressure conditions, so that the fluid is partially found in a liquid phase to act as a solvent with respect to undesirable solid or liquid particles to be eliminated, where the fluid is in a gaseous state i.e. carbon dioxide gaseous state, at normal temperature and pressure conditions. The fluid is circulated in a closed loop including the heat exchanger to be cleaned for a period of sufficient time to eliminate the particles. An independent claim is also included for an installation for implementing a method for inner cleaning of a heat exchanger.
