Aliphatic percarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting an alkyl anthraquinone hydroperoxide in an organic solvent with an aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence, as catalyst, of a strong inorganic acid, a cation-exchange resin or an organo-sulphonic acid. The alkyl anthraquinone hydroperoxide is preferably prepared by hydrogenating an alkyl anthraquinone and oxidizing the hydrogenation product. Specified solvents are high boiling alkyl acetates such as heptyl and octyl acetates, hydrocarbons such as pseudo-cumene and mesitylene, ketones such as diisobutyl ketone, and mixtures of such solvents.
