An electric plug comprising electrical connectors 3 for connecting the plug mechanically and electrically to a socket of an electric power supply and an output 4 for supplying electricity to an appliance further comprises a user operated switch 7 for activating a countdown timer. The timer is arranged to, in response to operation of the switch, allow electricity to flow to the output and commence monitoring of the time and, on determining that a set time period has passed since operation of the switch, prevent electricity from flowing to the output. The timer may be housed in a cover 6 of the electric plug. A keypad may be provided to input a security code to operate the plug. A display 8 may be provided to indicate when the set time period will end. A further switch may be provided to allow a user to vary the set time period. |
