Disclosed is a drive unit for a sliding door of a vehicle. At least one carriage on which a sliding door can be mounted as well as at least one guide rail for guiding the carriage along the displacement path defined by the guide rail are provided. Pulling or pushing forces can be applied to the carriage according to the direction of travel via at least one pulling-pushing rope. Several successive joint-type driving elements are provided which are interconnected so as to be hingedly twistable relative to each other similar to chain members. At least one, preferably all driving elements are connected to the pulling-pushing rope while at least one of the driving elements is mechanically connected to the carriage.
