A data modulation and demodulation method, a modulation and demodulation unit, and a recording and reproducing method and apparatus are provided to reduce the amount of operation in modulation and demodulation and the use capacity of a memory by minimizing the period which uses a lookup table. A data modulation method comprises a step for selecting one among a plurality of operation methods based on the least significant bit(LSB) of source data, and a step for producing modulation data from the source data according to the selected operation method. The operation method selecting step is based on the number of 0 and 1 included in the least significant bit. The source data is 6 bit data, the modulation data is 8 bit data, and the least significant bit is the lowest four bits of the source data.
