The filter (2) has a filter housing (8) and a filter element (26) arranged within the filter housing. Units are provided for deactivation of the filter, which automatically closes a leading flow path (S1) by the filter element. The filter element immediately open another flow path (S2), if the minimum time permitted for an initial supply of filtering fluid in the filter housing is elapsed and the minimum quantity of the fluid permitted through the filter housing and the filter element is depressed. An independent claim is also included for a method for filtering a fluid, particularly fuel.
