The object is to provide an industrially advantageous process for producing 5-phenylisophthalic acid with excellent selectivity and in a high yield, which can recycle/reuse a catalyst. Disclosed is a process for production of 5-phenylisophthalic acid of the formula (1), which comprises the following steps (A) to (C): (A) reacting metaxylene with cyclohexene in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride to produce 1-cyclohexyl-3,5-dimethylbenzene; (B) performing the dehydrogenation of 1-cyclohexyl-3,5-dimethylbenzene produced in the step (A) with a dehydrogenation catalyst to produce 3,5-dimethylbiphenyl; and (C) dissolving 3,5-dimethylbiphenyl produced in the step (B) in a solvent and oxidizing 3,5-dimethylbiphenyl in the presence of an oxidation catalyst to produce 5-phenylisophthalic acid. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009 |
