A reclining device for a seat such as an automobile seat operated by a differential transmission mechanism (taumel mechanism). The reclining device does not require precise machining of that surface of an external gear to which a sliding bearing is press-fitted and can be produced at low cost without the degree of design freedom restricted by standards for bearing bushes. The reclining device has the specific differential transmission mechanism to enable adjustment of the opening angle of a hinge for joining the seat surface portion to the back rest portion of the seat. In the differential transmission mechanism, an internal gear (1) is meshed with the external gear (2) having teeth slightly less in number than the internal gear, and a pair of wedge-shaped pieces (6, 6') is arranged in an arcuate gap formed between the shaft hole (3) of the external gear (2) and the small diameter portion of a cam (5) that is formed integrally with the shaft (4) of the internal gear (1). The arrangement of the pair of wedge-shaped pieces (6, 6') is such that tapered ends (6a, 6'a) thereof are opposite to each other. At least the outer surfaces (6b, 6'b) of the wedge-shaped pieces (6, 6') are formed of a material having low sliding friction. This is because they function as frictional sliding contact surfaces when the wedge-shaped pieces (6, 6') are pressed by the cam (5) and moved in the arcuate gap in a sliding manner. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009
