The method involves classifying sub-expressions of an expression into a subset comprising calculation sub-expressions and a subset comprising navigation sub-expressions. The navigation sub-expression is linked to the calculation sub-expression, where the subset comprising calculation sub-expressions is represented by an evaluation tree and the subset comprising navigation expressions is represented by a navigation tree. The navigation tree is constituted with compiled navigation targets. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for analyzing an XML path language expression comprising an identifying unit (2) a computer program having a set of instructions for enabling the implementation of the analyzing method.
