PURPOSE: To provide a character string prediction device and method that enable a user to select a predicted candidate character string at arbitrary timing by controlling display updating timing of a prediction processing result. CONSTITUTION: A character string input method inputs a pattern, computes pattern evaluation values with the use of a pattern recognition dictionary, outputs a plurality of recognized candidate characters in descending order of pattern evaluation value, selects an optimum recognized candidate character from them with the use of a context dictionary, combines the recognized candidate characters to generate search character strings, searches a prediction dictionary with the strings as keys, outputs a plurality of predicted candidate character strings, and displays the predicted candidate character strings or optimum recognized candidate character. A condition for control of display update to the latest predicted candidate character string is checked, and if the condition of display update to the latest predicted candidate character string is found satisfied, the control is performed for display update to the latest predicted candidate character string.
